THE CLUSTER: Why is Rosé Pink?

Hey there, grape! Ever wondered why Rosé has that gorgeous pink hue that just screams summer vibes and Instagram-worthy picnics? Well, you’re in luck because we’re diving into the colorful world of Rosé wine, perfect for anyone aspiring to level up their wine game from “sipper” to “connoisseur”!

Rosé wine sports its fabulous pink color through a pretty cool process that’s all about timing. Unlike its red and white wine cousins, Rosé’s unique shade comes from the grape skins, but only for a short period.

So here’s the scoop: We start with red grapes—yes, red grapes!—which give Rosé its delightful pink hue. The process begins with harvesting these grapes and giving them a quick, chilled “spa bath” with their skins. This brief skin contact, lasting from a few hours to a day, imparts the wine with its lovely color and a hint of red wine flavors.

At our winery, we grow specific grape varieties for our Rosé, aiming for lower sugar and higher acidity to ensure a fresh and vibrant character. For our Rosé of Syrah, we carefully whole-cluster press the grapes as soon as they arrive. Given that Syrah skins are deeply pigmented, we use a white wine press cycle to manage the color extraction precisely. The goal is to strike a perfect balance: too light, and it lacks Syrah’s character; too dark, and it becomes overly full-bodied and earthy.

Once the fermentation is complete and the sugar has all been converted, the wine is racked off the lees into neutral oak barrels and stainless drums, where it ages for 3-4 months before bottling. This meticulous process helps us capture the best of both worlds—a Rosé that's vibrant and true to its Syrah roots.

So, there you have it. Rosé gets its Instagrammable hue from a quick hangout session between the juice and the grape skins. Whether you’re beach lounging, park picnicking, or just chilling at home, a glass of Rosé is perfect for those looking to add a splash of color and fun to their wine journey. Now you can impress your friends with your wine knowledge at the next gathering. Cheers to staying pink and sipping chic!
